Rapids Opener

[Apologies for the infrequent posts here, but life is a bit nuts in advance of the move to Peterborough. The new address will also spell a new beginning, I think -- I can hardly justify calling the blog Rural Free Delivery if we live smack in the middle of town. So once things are settled, there'll be a new blog, and I'll retire RFD. But before that happens, there'll be a few more posts. This shot is from the Ottawa Rapids' first game, back on May 22nd.]

[See, I've never really grown up. I still harbour the slim hope that if I don a baseball jersey, I might somehow become a professional baseball player. This is my latest attempt: a brand new, hyper-authentic Ichiro Suzuki jersey. A little pathetic, I know.]

[Mixed emotions about this news. Obviously, we love this uniform. But this uniform sort of leaves us wanting.]

[We're nothing but ecstatic about this news, though]

[Halloween - man, did we have fun. First we carved the pumpkins.]

[Then we put out the decorations.]

[Put on our costumes.]

[Soon O.J. showed up, and things really started to swing.]

[Then we all hit the dancefloor. "Who are you supposed to be, Larry Walker?" one partygoer asked me. "An honest mistake," I told her, "but no. I'm clearly Delino DeShields."]

[Bottom line: We love Halloween.]

[At the ballpark, one last time]

[The national anthems]

[All indications are that this is the last time the Lynx will play in Ottawa, in all likelihood headed for Allentown, PA next season to be rechristened the IronPigs - if that's the case, this was the perfect day to remember them by. The sun was hot, the beer cold, the lineup featured a guy named Gookie, and they even dusted off the old mascot (note the Montreal Expos sleeve patch).]

[Seven and a half thousand fans in the stands]

[Dad and I have been coming to these games for 15 years]

[Not sure who this boy is, but he made his way onto the field after the game and ran the bases, stopping near home to consult with manager John Russell. The crowd stood and cheered the whole time, exploding in rapturous shouts when he stomped on home plate.]

[Lynx Stadium]

[Afterward, back to my parents' house to find ADF waiting for us]
